An advanced biometric technology- facial recognition uses the medium of facial features in order to identify a person. The facial recognition technology is used today for a variety of other uncommon features, such an unlocking a phone, for instance, in addition to its common purpose of identifying stalkers.
A wide array of photo and video data is necessary to make the technology of facial recognition work effectively. The facial recognition systems examine visual data, in addition to other several images and videos which are obtained via high-quality CCTV cameras. Additionally, machine learning and artificial intelligence also helps in recognizing patterns found in visual data and thus compares new videos and images which are stored in the databases which thus produces the end effect of determining the identity of the person.
Apart from its obvious advantage of providing security and safety, facial recognition technology also helps in identifying criminals. Moreover, airports and the US Department of Homeland Security are also adopting to the technology. Another plus point of the technology is, it does not use contact like fingerprinting or other security measures, such as ID etc. It also helps in adding conveniences, like tagging photos on Facebook.
As a con, facial recognition poses a major threat for an individual’s privacy. Many institutions have also come up with laws to ban real time face-recognition surveillance law. Cambridge, San Francisco, etc., for instance. The risks of the technology outweighed its benefits, as was quoted by these institutions. Furthermore, the technology is not as effective in identifying people of color and women, in comparison to white males, owning to its faulty algorithms. This calls for incidence of misidentification through the technology.
In order to benefit from any kind of technology, overcoming challenges is a prerequisite, same is also the case with facial recognition system.
