Engineering students of PolyU win championship at ASM Technology Award 2019
An annual event organized in 2015, draws attention to the excellence in technology and mirrors the outstanding final year projects of undergraduates from top-notch schools and faculties engineering in Hong Kong.
This year the winning team presented a project developed by a trio group from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of PolyU. Presenting their final year project titled, ‘ASME Competition Robot Development & Vision Based Target Alignment’, the group was awarded a gold award at the competition.
The team had developed a semi-automated robot with a unique gripper design for garbage collection, and it also used the help of vision-based alignment. The robot has among others a feature of motorized platform used for navigating a compact environment and a micro controller system for wireless communication and control, in addition to a vision based system for object detection and robot positioning.
The robot was allegedly designed in two stages, from studying real-life tools such as forklift, dump cart and robotic arms.
The annual event has been organized since 2015 to recognize excellence in technology, showcasing outstanding final year projects of undergraduates from top faculties and schools of engineering in Hong Kong.
Participating for the fifth time, PolyU won the championship for the second time. The entry of PolyU student project belonged to the top ten final year projects and were nominated by Hong Kong’s five universities. Apart from prizes, the winning teams will be invited to attend ASM technology tour to Europe.
